You know what? I’ve finally had it with the six holes face on cars. You know, the one that’s proved to be the standard arrangement for 30 years now. I get that you need to package two headlight areas, two fog areas, a radiator area, and more radiator, with a bumper through the middle, but FFS.

My thanks to Audi and Ford for at least realizing some models need to knock it the fuck off. Not you, Nissan, you’re hurting the cause. That Lexus guy can stay. Maybe.

When I see a six hole face I cri evrytiem. With Audi I think it’s only a matter of time before the entire front of the car is grille, like a huge-ass baleen whale face with inset lights. Bring back the no hole face!

I would really like to know if its impossible to build a properly braced open bumper. Because, all these grills extending their pattern over a blatantly or less blatantly there thru-grill bumper are only hiding the problem. Picture, if you will, what styling would be enabled if the bumper could pass air and be a more proper part of the grill.

The six-holer, done right. In fact, eight of em if you need brake cooling.

That’s more of an eight hole face in general. Definitely not the object of my ire at all. No more than this is:

Kinja'd!!!

You could claim that a ‘65 Riv has a six-hole face, but it’s really not coloring inside the lines AT ALL.

With modern materials, it must be possible. I mean, we had well-integrated Endura bumpers in 1968:

Kinja'd!!!

But we won’t see this again:

Kinja'd!!!

Also, I’ve done a shitload of work on a ‘48 Continental, and I found that every car’s bumpers are a little different. Fitting bumper parts from one to another is a total bastard, and when fitted with those overriders the front is a 7-piece affair.

Make it full width with inset lights, to call back to this:

Totally fine, though worth fewer points for being a carryover design heritage from before all this nonsense.

That’s kind of cool on the ‘48. Not really surprising, given the highly tailored hand-built nature of them. I kind of like the slanted chin look of the ‘42, but that’s a rarely seen thing.

It really is a neat car. I think the front end of the postwar cars is overly busy, and prefer the earlier nose as well. The one I brought back to life had been in a flood decades ago and had floated down a creek (hence the bumper damage), and had a ‘52 Merc flathead in it because the original twelve had broken its crank way back when, because that’s what happens when your V12 only has 3 mains.

Like DeSoto, Lincoln took a huge daring step forward in ‘42 and then a half step back in ‘46, which one can kind of understand as part of a drive for cheapness in the postwar recession and a larger Okay Let’s Not Have Quite So Much Silliness, Gentlemen movement, but it’s kind of a shame.

I really do think I’ve stumbled onto something with the bumper line hockey stick past the headlight and extended (fake) grill under the headlights. It’s not as transparently easy to get the aero right on, but given the horrible Cd of a lot of modern cars anyway, why the eff isn’t that a thing?

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht

The grille is evidence of that. The 42's is really delicate and well considered, probably carefully braised together from multiple pieces, whereas the ‘46-up is a big, ugly, heavy casting slathered in chrome.

Also, damn I’d love to do a mild custom on one of those DeSotos, I always forget about them.

As long as you give the air somewhere to go (ie extractors at the cowl or under the car or something), the drag penalty could be minimized. It should be a thing.

The ‘42 is just a tight car in general. Just loopy enough, some almost 50s level flair to the design, a clean compact platform which is halfway between a late 40s widebody and the styling of previous years. Strangely, I don’t think the waterfall grill exactly as executed is all that good. I wonder if a happy medium could be bashed together between the DeSoto and some repro parts for a ‘42 Nash?

Kinja'd!!!

The Nashes didn’t suffer from quite as much of a hit ‘42-’46 as some makers did, but there’s still some kickassery lost. Those signals and the narrow upper grill/single line lower grill and the amazing understated hood ornament, not to mention the little art deco bumper sponsons? Pfft. Anyway, it’s another style orphan.

That’s an odd one, but in combination with the DeSoto Zoidberg grille there could be something there. I wonder if Alex Tremulis took some inspiration from the Nash, with that much empty space between the lights and center grille over the full-width lower I’m seeing some Tucker there. Also, since we’re ostensibly on that topic, flow-through bumper FTW:

You know what? I need to save up about ten grand, you need to save up about ten grand, and we need to meet up somewhere in the middle of the country in a junkyard and just load up. Then go somewhere and get to work. Your fronkensteening tastes are probably as close to the same wavelength as mine as anybody else on here, so I think we can make this work.

IN. There are some great old yards out in the CA valley and in the Sierras that still have loads of old American iron stashed away. I’ve been wanting to do a road trip with a flatbed and some cash in hand for years. There’s probably even better stuff out in the desert Southwest. No million-dollar barnfinds, but solid sub -$5k projects for days. Just gotta drive around, shake some hands, and find them.

Also, I fucking hate my job and need to work with my hands again and learn more fab, so this would be ideal.

Also also, Fronkensteening is best considered after a few Franziskaners.
